Francis W. Newman

Francis W. Newman

Francis W. Newman was the younger brother of Cardinal Newman, founder of the Catholic Brompton and Birmingham Oratories.  Unlike his brother, however, Francis was a practising Baptist and professor of Latin at University College, London.  A staunch liberal, Newman was a supporter of women’s rights, as well as those of other minorities in British society.

It is no surprise, therefore, that he keenly advocated a Union victory over the Confederates, and this was repeatedly shown in his letters-to-the-editor of The London American, where he repeatedly criticised the South’s slaveholding history.
